What is the h-index?
The h-index is a metric that combines a researcher's productivity and impact into a single number. Its definition is simple:
If your h-index is h, you have h publications each cited at least h times.
For example, a researcher with an h-index of 20 has 20 papers each cited at least 20 times. This design prevents both a single "super-cited" paper and many uncited papers from inflating the score alone — it's a balanced measure.
How is it calculated?
Step by step:
- Sort all your publications by citation count, from high to low.
- Move down the list, comparing each publication's rank number with its citation count.
- The rank just before the point where the rank number exceeds the citation count is your h-index.
Example: suppose the sorted citations are 25, 12, 9, 7, 4, 2.

Up to the 4th paper, rank ≤ citations; it breaks at the 5th. So the h-index = 4.
Limitations: read the number in context
The h-index is powerful but not flawless:
- Field differences — high h-indices are common in STEM; much lower values are normal in social sciences and humanities. Comparing two people from different fields by bare h-index is misleading.
- Time — the h-index requires accumulating citations; early-career researchers are inevitably at a disadvantage versus long careers.
- Never decreases — once reached, an h-index doesn't go back, which makes it poor at measuring current activity.
- Open to manipulation — artificial self-citation can inflate the score; some tools (e.g. Scopus) offer a filter to exclude self-citations.

A critical point: the h-index changes depending on which database you look at, because each counts different sources:
- Google Scholar — broadest coverage (including proceedings and preprints); usually the highest value, on average ~1.4× WoS.
- Scopus — ~1.1× WoS; mid-level.
- Web of Science — most conservative, narrowest coverage.
So when sharing an h-index, you should state which database it comes from.
How do you raise it (ethically)?
The only legitimate route is producing quality work that earns citations and making it visible:
- Publish in the right journal — a suitable, well-read journal raises your paper's chance of reaching the right reader and being cited.
- Be visible — keep your ORCID and Google Scholar profiles current; increase your academic visibility systematically.
- Widen access — open access and preprints make your work easier to read and cite.
